The Opportunity
The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) at the EBRD provides intellectual leadership on the economic aspects of transition across our regions of operation. We are currently recruiting a Principal Economist to play a lead role within the Transition Impact and Global Economics team.
This is a senior analytical position. You will take ownership of the Bank’s macroeconomic forecasting processes and project manage the production of the Regional Economic Prospects—the EBRD’s flagship report on economic trends. You will work closely with the Director of Research and country economists to link global economic shifts to regional realities.
Key Responsibilities
Macroeconomic Leadership & Forecasting
- Project Management: Lead the workflow for the Regional Economic Prospects report, liaising with country economists and analysts across the Policy and Partnerships Vice-Presidency.
- Modeling: Maintain and develop robust macroeconomic forecasting models to support the Bank’s outlook.
- Global Monitoring: Analyze developments in the global economy and financial markets, assessing their transmission mechanisms and impact on EBRD regions.
Research & Policy Analysis
- Thematic Research: Undertake empirical analysis on critical issues such as macro-financial linkages, cross-border integration, trade policy, and political economy.
- Publication: Draft chapters for the Transition Report, the Regional Economic Prospects, and external blogs or policy papers.
- Advisory: Prepare high-level presentations for the Chief Economist and senior management. You will also participate in discussions regarding the impact of potential Bank investments.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for an economist with a strong academic background and the ability to translate rigorous research into actionable policy advice.
Essential Qualifications
- Education: A PhD in Economics (or equivalent) from a leading university is required.
- Research Track Record: A demonstrated history of economic analysis and research, with the proven ability to relate findings to real-world policy issues.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal English skills are mandatory. You must be capable of drafting official documents and representing the Bank at a high standard.
- Technical Skills: Experience working with complex economic datasets and statistical software packages.
Desirable Assets
- Familiarity with the EBRD’s regions of operation.
- Specific expertise or work experience regarding the economies of Sub-Saharan Africa or Iraq would be a distinct advantage.
