Operational Context
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, working in more than 40 countries to provide adequate assistance and protection to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, and returnees.
In Colombia, DRC is responding to a complex humanitarian crisis driven by armed conflict and mixed migration flows. We are currently recruiting an Emergency Assistant to support our rapid response operations. This role is critical for ensuring that life-saving assistance reaches the most vulnerable communities efficiently and in compliance with humanitarian standards.
Position Mandate
The Emergency Assistant plays a vital operational role in the implementation of emergency projects. Working under the supervision of the Emergency Team Leader, you will support the day-to-day delivery of humanitarian aid, including food security, shelter, and non-food items (NFI) distribution.
Your primary mandate is to facilitate the smooth execution of field activities, ensuring that assistance is delivered with dignity and accountability to affected populations. You will act as a key link between DRC and the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities
Field Implementation & Distribution
- Support the planning and execution of emergency distributions (food, hygiene kits, shelter materials) in strict adherence to DRC standard operating procedures.
- Organize distribution sites to ensure safety, order, and accessibility for all beneficiaries, paying special attention to vulnerable groups.
- Conduct beneficiary registration and verification exercises to ensure aid reaches the intended targets.
Community Engagement & Accountability
- Serve as a frontline focal point for community members, providing clear information about project activities and selection criteria.
- Facilitate focus group discussions and community meetings to gather feedback and identify emerging needs.
- Ensure that the Community Feedback and Response Mechanism (CFRM) is accessible and that complaints are handled according to protocol.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Collect accurate data during field activities using digital tools (e.g., Kobo Collect) to support monitoring and evaluation efforts.
- Report any security incidents or protection concerns observed in the field immediately to the Team Leader.
- Assist in the preparation of activity reports, highlighting challenges and lessons learned.
Logistics & Administration
- Coordinate with the logistics team to ensure the timely transport and warehousing of relief items.
- Manage administrative tasks related to field movements, including travel authorizations and expense reports.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a dedicated humanitarian worker with a strong commitment to serving people in crisis.
Essential Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in humanitarian aid, community work, or emergency response.
- Education: Technical or University degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, Logistics, or a related field.
- Context Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of the humanitarian context in Colombia, particularly regarding displacement and armed conflict.
- Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word). Experience with mobile data collection tools is an asset.
