The Mission

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is dedicated to establishing a historical record of human rights violations in Syria. Our comprehensive Trial Monitoring Program ensures that justice processes remain transparent and accessible to victims and families. Since 2020, we have monitored key Universal Jurisdiction cases across Europe to bridge the gap caused by the lack of official transcripts in many domestic courts.

We are currently seeking a Trial Monitor based in Stockholm, Sweden. This is a consultancy position designed to support our ongoing monitoring of the Mahmoud S. trial before the Solna District Court. This case concerns international crimes committed during the siege of Yarmouk, Damascus, and represents a significant moment for accountability.

Scope of Assignment

Reporting to the Trial Monitoring Lead, you will serve as SJAC’s eyes and ears inside the courtroom. Your primary mandate is to produce accurate, objective documentation of the proceedings.

Key Responsibilities

1. Court Attendance & Documentation

  • Attend assigned court proceedings at the Solna District Court.
  • Take detailed, accurate notes on legal arguments, testimony, and procedural developments during hearing days.

2. Reporting & Analysis

  • Draft comprehensive English-language reports summarizing trial proceedings.
  • Conduct background research on factual and legal matters arising during the trial to ensure contextually accurate reporting.

3. Coordination

  • Liaise with the SJAC trial monitoring team regarding publication processes and legal queries.
  • Collaborate on the review of reports before they are finalized for the public record.

Candidate Profile

This role is ideal for a law student, legal researcher, or human rights professional with a strong interest in international criminal law and Universal Jurisdiction.

Essential Qualifications

  • Location: You must live in or near Stockholm, Sweden. This is a mandatory requirement.
  • Languages: Fluency in both Swedish and English (verbal and written) is required to follow proceedings and report effectively.
  • Education: A University degree is required. A degree in Law, Human Rights, or a related field is strongly preferred. Current students in these fields are encouraged to apply.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of Swedish criminal procedure.
  • Understanding of the Syrian conflict and the context of the Yarmouk siege is preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to synthesize complex legal information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Terms of Engagement

  • Contract Type: Consultancy / Temporary.
  • Workload: Approximately 2 hearing days per month, with some flexibility required based on the court schedule.
  • Compensation: The position is paid at a fixed rate of $50 USD per hearing day attended.
